It is a good idea after installing all rings on the pistons to recheck each ring on each piston for correct installation.
Oil piston ring orientation diagram.
Install oil ring support rails on the bottom of the oil ring groove with the antirotational locking detent facing downward.
Oil expander tabs face up as shown below.
Place the ring squarely into the piston groove taking care to keep it flat.
Push the rod and piston out through the top of the cylinder.
Step 4 install rings on piston.
Oil rings actual gap 015 050.
Using a proper ring installation tool open the oil ring just enough to allow the ring to go over the top diameter of the piston.
The oil ring s main function is to control the amount of oil that makes it between the piston and bore which is necessary for lubrication and heat transfer purposes.
The underside of this piston features an l suffix indicating that this piston is intended for the left bank of a v engine.
Piston rings and connecting rod oil control ring match marks note.
This piston ring manufacturer has color coded the ends of the oil control ring expander in an effort to prevent overlap during installation.
Quick video on how to install piston rings.
Rotate the oil ring support rail until antirotational locking detent falls between the opening at intersection of ring groove and wrist pin hole.
We recommend approximately 030 back clearance with our oil rings.
Pistons intended for the right bank will feature an r suffix.
One two piece oil rings.
The dot or marking on each ring always faces up.
Please note that all three mm or narrower oil rings regardless of brand work best with split.
Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and a pip mark or dot on the side must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston and pip mark towards the top of the piston.
Before removing piston clean any carbon from the top of the cylinder bore to prevent ring breakage when removing the piston.
Install oil control rings.
Emission compliant vlv uses this ring package piston.
Work the opened ring down from the top of the piston to the oil groove.
10 install oil ring assembly as usual.
Once the expander has been installed the oil.
This will allow oil which has been scraped off the cylinder wall by the top oil ring rail to fl ow radially to the oil return holes.
A larger chamfered oil hole at the top of the small end on some rod designs provides a funnel for improved oil reservoir for floating pin.
In this case the manufacturer s recommendation is to align the expander ring ends with the wrist pin hole in the piston.
Second ring 0050 0055.
The bottom oil ring is actually made up of three different rings two narrow rails and one expander.
